The Divine Romance

This album features, honours and celebrates four Indian Classical Ragas which are usually performed around midnight and into the early hours of the morning. A time where the imagination is guiding one away from the eternal reality and it’s influential predominance on experiences. As the shift in atmosphere suggests sleepiness, one’s sensitivity may feel activated to encompass varying dimensions of sensory possibilities as one’s guard and so limitations drop like a veil. Thus one may feel romantically seduced by the persuasive qualities presented by a reality that reveals it’s self to be a Divine dance.

Raga Yaman - 9 - 12am

Raga Yaman is a truly magnificent raga that has been regarded as one of the most fundamental and grandest ragas of Hindustani music.

Due to the fact that most teachers and practitioners recognise this raga to be a firm stepping stone on the journey of Indian Classical music, it is usually presented as the first raga to explore.

It is know to be a mountain raga and to therefore posses the power of evoking the mood that one may have when situated amongst the grand and undulating features of such a landscape; as well as to evoke the feeling of peace and expansion that may spellbind one at such elevated heights of consciousness.

Raga Jhinjhoti - Usually late at night.

Raga Jhinjhoti is a very popular Raga due to it’s sweetness and romantic mood.
It is commonly performed during weddings and suits the musical style known as Thumri (light Classical) very comfortably. However, it seems to be successful performed in the styles of the Khyal and Dhrupad too, which could be described as being comparatively more deeper and devotional. Perhaps because it can offer the effect of drawing one deep into a warming and peaceful state of bliss.

Raga Bageshri - Around midnight.

Raga Bageshri is hundreds of years old. It is a distinguished and romantic raga which offers ample scope for elaboration.

Certain movements that are encourage by the nature or it’s ascending and descending skeletal scale offer a sweet and somewhat intoxicating atmospheric mood.

I feel that it is courageous, yet romantically gentle as it’s phrases caress the listener and seduces them into a calm and blissful state of ecstasy.

Raga Jog - 12 - 3am

Raga Jog is said to be a fairly recent addition to Indian Classical music. It seems to be attractive to musicians from Jazz and Blues backgrounds who curiously feel tempted to explore Indian Classical music. And in doing so, perhaps discover more about the styles they have chosen to predominantly focus upon.
One prominent quality of Raga Jog’s personality is highlighted when particular attention, and phrasing is given around and in relation to a note which is called ‘Ga’ in the Indian classical scale of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni.
This is because there is both a major and minor ‘Ga’.
The artist is always experiencing a feeling of fun and excitement as they attempt to keep discovering new and beautiful ways to approach these two Ga. It feel as though the flat Ga serves to hold one back from the temptation to directly enter the spaciousness and freedom which it is possible to feel in the natural Ga. Such an exercise of patience encourages natural Ga to shine magnificently once presented in full blossom.

For me this is a deep and sensual Raga. It is mystical, and powerful. Yet it offers sweetness as one of it’s many flavours and seductive charms.

It is my intention that you feel supported by the music which channels through me to explore an expanse range of emotional qualities which make up your being and reality. Qualities which are truly Divine.
