about

"Call of the Desert"

This album began it’s journey in 2019 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

I became friends with Fina Ahimsa on Facebook after recognising that in her profile picture she was holding an African N’goni harp. Considering that also we had a number of very dear friends of mine in common, it seemed that the natural thing to do was to see if she wanted to explore blending African and Indian music together in some creative collaborations. Then I noticed that she was currently residing in Chiang Mai, which was exactly where I was heading after one week. I love this kind of synchronicity and the magnetic attraction that pulls musicians together because the tuning of their vibrational frequency is complimentarily matching.

I really enjoyed hanging out with Fina and working together to record this album. She is a mysterious and very sensitive character for me. Very courageous, yet has a humble shyness with which I can relate. Musicians open themselves up to feel everything. It is a beautiful way to fall into the heart of life with full unrestrained trust, yet it can be a challenging and quite painful journey at times until our wings have fully spread.

Fina plays the African N’goni and Kora harp. She also plays the African Calabash and sings. Her vocals are exquisitely beautiful and trickles like nectar into the core of one’s heart. She is also a professional dancer and experienced a lot of success in her home country Brunei.

All the tracks on this album are of African origin. I am performing the Indian Classical Bansuri flute with them. Although my back ground regarding flute is pure Indian Classical, I have been in love with African music since my teenage years. I also studied and performed the African Djembe percussion professionally for many years.
Because I have been an improvisational musician since age eleven, I am able to simply feel into a piece of music and play as it invites me to play. However in this case I attempted on occasion to include a few techniques gathered from my Indian Classical background in order to give these versions of these songs a unique feeling, and for the purpose of enjoying how to blend the energies of two nations renowned for their incredibly evocative music.

It took several months of working on the computer all day everyday to edit, mix, and master these tracks. It is a journey that I love. I admit to being a nerdy perfectionist in this case. I love to caress each and every note and beat with loving care and to simultaneously feel how that every note and beat are connected with communication. Together they form a whole. When every detail is healthy, the whole is healthy and can breath life energy into it’s heart and soul.

This music is full power. It can activate you, lift you, relax you, inspire you to dance and move in a therapeutic manner. It can expand your imagination and stimulate your heart to radiant and feel filled with joy. It is an album intended to encourage happiness.

I'd like to thank Ilya Chistyakov from Russia also for his generous contribution of Kora harp. He is also an incredibly talented musician and plays music playfully. An approach which can be surprisingly rare actually. I love his warm and friendly vibe when exploring the magical shapes and colours of sound that the Kora harp offers.
Also my dear soul brother Luis Bergmann from Brazil has once again offered a sprinkle of magic with his genius guitar playing on one of the tracks. His versatility and flexible freedom is truly mesmerising.
I have really given my best to honour these sacred tracks, cultures and musicians by falling in love with the creative process and fruits of this album. A flower of immeasurable beauty.
Thank you always to my teacher Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
