about

Deep and romantic, yet steady and majestic, Raga Malkauns has won the hearts of so many lovers of Indian classical music.

It was the first Raga performed on Bansuri that I heard. A performance by my guru Ji (respectable teacher) Pandit. Hariprasad Chaurasia.
It came like a vine piercing confidently through the atmosphere in the room and penetrating deep into the core of my heart.

I had been chosen to serve and my path was laid out before me.

Twenty three years later I felt confident to try and record this album. I had been patiently preparing for it all that time. I love that this style of music insists on the practicing and cultivation of an attitude of patience until it rewards us with it's deepest secrets.

In May 2019 I went to my mountain retreat in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh where I go to practice each year. I spent three months practicing all day every day until I felt ready.

I entered my cave of mattresses and blankets and set up my studio recording equipment. Then waited.

Over the years I must have listened to my teacher's albums thousands of times. Falling more in love with it each time and experiencing an attunement to the quality of mood emanated as Raga Malkauns.
As this is a five note (pentatonic) scale, there can feel as though there is a limitation of possible phrases that can channel through in comparison to what can be achieved with other ragas that have more notes on offer for exploration.

However, if one is able to let go of any fear or self doubt, there are countless possibilities even with five notes.
I felt as through my teacher was playing through me. It was a truly magical experience. I'm so happy to have had the chance to record and share this album with you. And as always I am full of gratitude for my teacher.
And I would like to thank Harsh Wardhan Ji for his superb Bansuri flutes.

A Raga has very little to do with our mind actually. Raga means 'to colour'.
The Raga channels through in an improvised manner supported by a few structural features which serve to give form and character.
As it flows through a person the vibrational frequencies of the atmosphere due to the time of day and the season influence the ease and confidence with which the raga can meet this conscious dimension and inspire the receptive listeners to explore it's origin.
Different Ragas are usually considered to channel through best at different times and seasons, and in different landscape settings.

The Raga tempts us performers deeper due to the fact that when recognising that the less there is of our small limited self who wants to feel responsible for creating such beauty and earn a little praise from an audience, the more we are blessed by it's fearless expansion into endless areas of emotion. The more we get out of the way, the more beauty intoxicates us.

I feel, and know that many would agree that Raga Malkauns is very powerful and magical. It is one of the great master purifiers.

I welcome you to feel the sound of Raga Malkauns as it has chosen to manifest through me. May it colour your heart and imagination with splendid beauty.
